April 2016 Social Meeting

Fuchsia

There was an excellent attendance at the April social meeting. Fabulous Fuchsias was the title of the talk given by Geoff Smith, a fuchsia judge, from Long Eaton. He demonstrated how to take cuttings and pot them up, gave information on the best growing conditions, when to feed with nitrogen or potash and how to grow a standard fuchsia and how to plant a basket to achieve maximum effect. He finished his talk by showing pictures of fuchsias from shows that he had attended and they certainly were fabulous.

Despite the warm winter and concern that there may not be many daffodils in a fit condition to enter into the daffodil or spring flower competition there were a record number of entries, 22 in all. The winning entry was by Denise Kovarovic who was presented with the trophy.

Thanks for that report Pat. Anyone looking for any specific fuchsias shown by Geoff Smith, such as Devonshire Dumpling, and varieties with upward looking flowers, should take a visit to Thornton Nurseries. Aileen and I found a fabulous collection of over three hundred varieties of cuttings. I am sure you will find something to your liking.

Good luck
